The Expressive Portrait – Intensive Two-Week Workshop

June 17 - 28, 2019 • Shelton, Washington

Learn how to turn clay into flesh and hair and personality!  We will spend two weeks on nothing
but portrait sculpture.  Discover the most important elements of a successful portrait, and learn
professional techniques for getting them right.  And once you’ve got them right, learn from a
master portrait sculptor the finishing secrets which breathe life into the clay head, so that it
seems about to speak, smile or cry.
We will start by making a clay copy of a skull, then learn the facial muscles by modeling them
on the skull, then manipulate them to create expression.
We will make life-size head studies from two models, one male and one female.  The workshop will
be held at Cristina Mikulasek’s farm studio near the beautiful Olympic Peninsula.   If coming
from afar, try to add on a week for hiking and camping and beach walking!  $1,400 tuition
includes instruction, models, and materials.  Housing can be arranged to suit.

The Living Figure - Intensive Figure Workshop

August 5 - 16, 2019 • Shelton, Washington

We will spend two weeks on nothing but figure sculpture.  We will study anatomy and
proportion and make half-life-size clay figures from two models, one male and one female.
The workshop will be held at Cristina Mikulasek’s farm studio near the beautiful Olympic
Peninsula.   If coming from afar, try to add on a week for hiking and camping and beachwalking!
$1,400 tuition includes instruction, models, and materials.  Housing can be arranged to suit.
